This time, Hannah Huston called the shots.
Her last performance on Monday’s finale of the NBC reality hit TV series “The Voice” was an original composition co-written by Huston and her coach Pharrell Williams, an experience she called surreal.
“This is an incredible moment for me, to get to do an original song, to work with a producer of our generation,” she said, in footage shot while she and Williams worked on the song called “I Call The Shots.”
Williams said the song is a “beautiful story of confidence,” of Huston learning how to call the shots in her music career.
“Everybody pay attention, this time I call the shots,” she sang, walking into the audience during her performance. “This time I know what I want. Last time I forgot. Everyone pay attention, this time I call the shots.”
Coach Adam Levine said it was fun to watch Huston and Williams work together throughout the season.
“I’m just so happy for you,” he said. “It’s such an amazing process to see this guy work, it’s so amazing to see you take this song and turn it into one of the coolest things we’ve seen on the show,” he said.
Friends, coworkers, students and strangers-turned-fans gathered in the Railyard Monday night to cheer on the Arnold Elementary preschool teacher-turned-reality-show star during her final performances.
The sun came out and warmed the West Haymarket as the show's remaining four contestants performed a duet with their coaches, performed one original song and one more cover on the second-to-last night of the show.
Huston is competing with Laith Al-Saadi (Team Adam), Alisan Porter (Team Christina) and Adam Wakefield (Team Blake), vying for the grand prize: $100,000 and a record deal.
America has until 11 a.m. central time Tuesday to vote online, on Facebook, via “The Voice” app or by purchasing songs from iTunes. The winner will be announced Tuesday night.
The Railyard crowd listened as Williams said his hope for Huston was for her to “continue to have the moments people remember.”
She took the stage for her first performance in a red formal dress for a “dark and moody” rendition of “Every Breath You Take.” Written by Sting and performed by The Police, Coach Blake Shelton called it a risky choice, but said it paid off.
“That was so risky but I think it will be a big reward for you,” he said. “That was so beautiful, Hannah.”
Levine said he was “protective” of the song, because he loves it and worried because Huston’s performance was such a different interpretation, but said in the end he was “It was awesome and I love it and I love you and you’re badass,” he said. Her second performance was a duet with Williams of “Brand New,” which Williams has performed with Justin Timberlake.
